Vehicle Insurance For Non Licensed Driver

Reader’s Question:

My friend is disable and does not have a license anymore. I was just wondering if there is any way she can get vehicle insurance in her car even if she does not have a license? She have someone who will drive her to where she wants to go. What can she do?

Obtaining vehicle insurance for your friend might not be easy if they have no plans to obtain a drivers license again. It would not be legal in some states to get vehicle insurance for a non-licensed driver. Since the vehicle owner is disabled and unable to drive there might be some rules that may apply for them to get vehicle insurance. What she can do is to contact her state insurance regulator to know more information regarding consumer rights.

Once she gets information with her rights she can contact the insurance company she wants to get car insurance from. If the non-license individual can obtain car insurance, it might also be possible to have someone else insure the automobile for her. There are some insurers that will permit someone else to insure her automobile, even if they do not have an ‘insurable interest’ in it.

Basically it would be wise for both the car owner to have vehicle insurance on the vehicle as well as the driver having their own car insurance policy. This will give protection to both car owner and the driver in case of an accident. Usually the policy of the car owner is primary and the driver’s is secondary.
